Tarleton State Men, Women Add to Regional Leads With Wins at Weatherford

STEPHENVILLE — Tarleton State University strengthened its hold on the top spots in the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association’s Lone Star Region with first-place finishes by both the men’s and women’s teams in last weekend’s Weatherford College Rodeo.

The men, who captured top honors in all four rough stock events, amassed 580 points to top host Weatherford College by 145, and the Tarleton State women were first in all three events for a 270-point total, finishing 30 points ahead of runner-up WC.

Taylon Carmody won the bareback riding long go with a 79, then added a finals-best 81 for 160 points and first place. Devon Moore’s 77-78-155 was good for second in the event followed by a tie for third between Daxtyn Feild and Clay Greenslade, each with two-head 151s. Field’s tally came on rides of 72 and 79 points while Greenslade turned in scores of 73 and 78. Jace Lomheim’s 72-68-140 was good for sixth and Westen Chandler’s first round 67 earned him seventh.

Waitley Sharon was first in both go-rounds of saddle bronc riding with rides of 85.5 and 84.5 for a combined 170, tops in the average. Zane Monnett and Colton Lewis tied with two-ride 157s for third. Monnett scored a first go 77 and added an 80 in the finals, and Lewis earned an 80 in the preliminary round and a 77 in the short go.

Cauy Masters’ 72-82-154 was fifth, Coleman Shalbetter’s 68-79-147 was sixth, Clay Greenslade took seventh with a 71-75-146, Montgomery Parsons was eighth in the average with his 75-70-145 and Cooper Lane scored a 73 in the long go for ninth.

Bull rider Brenson Bartlett scored an 81 to win the first go-round, then added an 86 for first in the finals for a 167 to win the average.

Tie-down roper Brodey Clemons was first as well, turning in the finals’ top time of 7.9 seconds to go with his 8.3 in the long go for a total time of 16.2 seconds. Teammate Lucca Alvarenga’s 8.8-15.4-24.2 was good for eighth.

Team roper Justin Spenrath and partner Clayton Huston were fourth in team roping with their first-round 5.4, and Reece Dunham and Blake Campbell flashed a 6.2 in the opening round for fifth.

Tarleton State’s run to the women’s crown at WC featured firsts by breakaway roper Jenna Fulton, goat tyer Faith Lundberg and barrel racer Corley Holliday.

Fulton’s 4.6 two-run time featured a 2.1 best in the first go-round, and a 2.5 in the finals. Teammate Peyton Stone tied for second with her 2.4-2.3-4.7, and Meg Eiguren’s 2.4-2.7-5.1 was fourth.

Lundberg’s run to the top of the goat tying leaderboard included an opening round 6.8 and a 7 in the short go. Brooklyn Balch turned in runs of 7.5 and 7.2 seconds for a fourth-place 14.7. Makaylee Fischer’s sixth-place 15.2 included a 6.6 best in the long go and an 8.6 in the finals. Kaylie Garza’s 6.8-8.6-15.4 was seventh.

Six Tarleton State barrel racers finished in the top 10 at WC, led by Holliday’s 17.66-17.53-35.19. Maci McDonald’s 17.63-17.58-35.21 was good for second, Emilee Charlesworth took fourth with her 35.44 in the average on runs of 17.77 and 17.67 and Anna Clark was fifth with a 17.92-17.54-35.46. Brooklyn Balch’s eighth-place 35.69 came on runs of 17.82 and 17.87, and Ashlyn Goven’s 17.82-17.98 was ninth.

Both teams continue their fall schedules with appearances at the Oct. 23-25 Angelo State University Rodeo.
