STEPHENVILLE — Tarleton State Baseball battled back from an early deficit and used timely hitting along with strong pitching to earn a 5-4 victory over Le Moyne on Saturday night at the Tarleton State Baseball Complex.
Le Moyne (0-2) took an early 4-0 lead, but the Texans (2-0) responded with a big third inning to tie the game. Ike Shirey came through with the key hit, a bases-loaded triple that drove in three runs and brought the Texans back into the game.
Tarleton State took its first lead in the sixth inning when Kendyl Johnson scored after an error by the Dolphins’ shortstop, giving the Texans a 5-4 advantage.
After a tough start, the Texan bullpen settled in and shut down the Le Moyne offense. Ethan Jaques picked up the win after throwing four shutout innings, allowing just two hits while striking out three. Tai Phetluangsy finished the game strong, pitching two perfect innings and striking out three to earn the save.
Shirey led the Texans offensively, going 2-for-4 with three RBI. Sergio Guerra reached base twice and scored a run, while Carson Lorch added an RBI single in the third.
The Dolphins outhit the Texans 9-4, but committed three costly errors, plus walked eight batters and hit eight Texans at the plate.
Mitchell Earle (0-1) took the loss for Le Moyne, allowing an unearned run on a hit, three walks and three hit batters in three innings.
Tarleton State sent Ashton Bassett to the mound to start Saturday’s game, where he lasted two innings, allowing four runs on six hits and two walks, with three strikeouts. Aden Lucas also pitched for the Texans, allowing a hit in an inning.
Tarleton State will go for the sweep on Sunday. The Texans and Dolphins will square off at the Tarleton State Baseball Complex at 1 p.m.
