Sergio Guerra earns Buster Posey National Catcher of the Week honors and WAC Player of the Week

STEPHENVILLE  — Tarleton State senior catcher Sergio Guerra delivered a dominant opening weekend, earning both Buster Posey National Collegiate Catcher of the Week and WAC Baseball Player of the Week honors following a standout series against Le Moyne.

“It’s exciting to see our guys recognized on the national stage,” head coach Fuller Smith said. “This acknowledgement of his play is a tribute to the hard work and dedication to his craft day in and day out.” 
 

Guerra wasted no time making his presence known, posting a .667 batting average by going 6-for-9 at the plate. He powered the Texans’ offense with 13 RBI, six runs scored, three home runs, and a double. His weekend performance resulted in a 2.511 OPS, highlighted by a 1.778 slugging percentage and a .733 on-base percentage.

The senior catcher delivered big moments throughout the series, recording five or more RBI in two separate games. His best performance came Friday, when he went 3-for-3 with two home runs, eight RBI, and four runs scored in Tarleton State’s  20–3 victory. Guerra also crossed the plate in all three games of the sweep.

Behind Guerra’s explosive performance, Tarleton State opened the season with a three-game sweep of Le Moyne, marking the Texans’ first season-opening sweep during their NCAA Division I era and their first overall since 2017. 

As a team, Tarleton State leads the conference in several offensive categories, including batting average (.358), runs scored (38), home runs (six), slugging percentage (.621), on-base percentage (.537), walks (25), and hit by pitches (14). 

Guerra’s exceptional start to the season earned national recognition, as he was named the Buster Posey National Collegiate Catcher of the Week, solidifying his place among the top catchers in college baseball.
