STEPHENVILLE – Tarleton State Men’s Golf sophomore Luis Buech earned this week’s Men’s Golfer of the Week award from the Western Athletic Conference, the league announced Thursday.
The honor marks the second weekly/monthly award for Buech during his time at Tarleton State. This is the second straight week the Texans have earned WAC Men’s Golfer of the Week, with freshman Maximilian Bjornstrom receiving the award last week.
Buech collected his second top five finish of the season, leading the Texans’ player leaderboard with a tied for fourth finish at the Border Olympics. He also led the Texans to their second-best Division I finish, with the team tying for second overall in Laredo. Tallying 13 of his 14 birdies in the final two rounds, Buech had under par performances in each of his last two rounds. He shot a season-low 18-hole score of 67 in the second round of the Border Olympics, lifting himself into the top 10.
As the Texans’ top finisher in the last two fall tournaments, Buech had a 6-under-par performance at the FAU Invitational to tie for third overall on the player leaderboard. He also helped lead the Texans to their first-ever Division I team title at the FAU Invitational.
Prior to helping the Texans make team history, Buech accomplished individual history at the Oregon State Invitational. The sophomore from Germany obtained the program’s first hole-in-one in the Division I era in competition. The historic shot came in the third round on the 5th hole on a Par 3 that ranged 148 yards.
Buech, a three-time Global Junior Golf Tour champion, had a stroke average of 73.22 in three events in his lone season at the University of New Mexico.
Prior to coming to the United States, Buech had a successful junior career in Germany. He was the runner-up at the U18 German Championship in 2023. The Löwenrot Gymnasium product was also ranked 670 in the World Amateur Golf Rankings in 2022. He won the Atlantic Youth Trophy in 2022 and 2024 and was the Portuguese Intercollegiate Open winner in 2022.
Competing for Golf Club St. Leon-Rot, Buech helped his team to back-to-back national championships in 2023 and 2024. After winning the men’s amateur conference championship, Buech and Golf Club St. Leon-Rot advanced to the national championship and won it all in back-to-back seasons. He was also a Boys U18 National Champion in 2023.
Tarleton State returns to action March 2-3 at the Golden Nugget Invite in Lake Charles, Louisiana.
