HUMBLE – Tarleton State Men’s Golf redshirt freshman Alvaro Pastor collected his second individual title of the season, winning the All-American Intercollegiate at the Golf Club in Houston on Tuesday.
Pastor, who won the individual title at Golden Nugget Invitational earlier this month, is the first player in program history to capture first place in back-to-back events. The Madrid, Spain, native, won the All-American Intercollegiate by five strokes and beat seven players in Scoreboard’s Top 100 rankings.
Despite difficult and windy conditions impacted by Monday’s weather, that did not slow Pastor in the early rounds. After four birdies in the first round, Pastor tallied eight birdies in the second 18 holes for a 6-under-par 66. He closed the last round with three birdies while only bogeying twice for a 1-under-par 71. Pastor was the only player in the tournament to finish with an under-par final score.
Tarleton State had another strong finish as a team, coming in third out of 16 teams with a 54-hole score 899. The Texans finished ahead of ACU, Houston, North Texas, Nebraska and No. 49 nationally ranked Rice. Only No. 4 nationally ranked Arkansas and Eastern Michigan finished ahead of the Texans. The Texans collected their third straight top three finish and have placed in the top three in four of their last five events.
Junior Juan Ballester recorded his highest finish as a Texan, tying for 6th on the player leaderboard. Ballester shot seven birdies and had a 1-under-par 71 in the final round to crack the top 10.
Sophomore Luis Buech tied for 43rd with a 54-hole score of 233 while fellow sophomore Kellen Young had a 235 54-hole score to tie for 51st. Freshman Maximilian Bjornstrom rounded out the Texans’ lineup by tying for 65th with a 54-hole score of 238. Sophomore Drew Ironside cracked the top 10 in the individual tournament, tying for ninth with a 54-hole score of 233. Freshman Nicholas Papacharalambous tied for 13th in the individual tournament with a 54-hole score of 236.
“The team had another solid tournament and I’m super proud of Pastor,” head coach Chance Cain said. “The conditions yesterday were crazy hard and the 66 he posted was one of the best rounds I’ve got to witness first hand. It was awesome for him to keep the momentum winning back-to-back and I’m excited to see what else is in store. Same goes for the team as we continue to keep trending upwards.”
Tarleton State returns to action on Monday, March 30 when it competes in the Memphis Intercollegiate.
