James Douglas Johnson, affectionately known as “Doug” to his friends and loved ones, went home to be with the Lord on June 4, 2026.

Doug was born on March 8, 1934, to William and Velma Johnson in Terrell, Texas. He grew up with a deep appreciation for the land, which led him to Texas A&M University, where he proudly graduated in 1955 with a degree in Agricultural Engineering.

Following his graduation, Doug began a long and fulfilling career with the United States Soil Conservation Service (SCS), dedicating his expertise to working alongside farmers and ranchers across the state of Texas. His career was briefly paused in 1956 when he answered the call to serve his country, enlisting in the United States Navy. He was stationed out of San Diego and served honorably aboard the destroyer USS Southerland.

During his time in San Diego, Doug married the love of his life, Mary Cleere, also of Terrell, on March 9, 1957. Together, they shared 69 beautiful years of marriage and raised three children: Janice, Jim, and Elizabeth.

Doug retired from the Soil Conservation Service after 40 years, but his passion for conservation kept him active; he went on to work for the state of Texas for another 10 years.

Above all else, Doug was a man of profound faith in God. He shared his faith freely and lived his life as a reflection of Jesus’ love, leaving an undeniable impact on everyone who entered his life. He was a steady, loving presence for his family and a true servant leader. For 40 years, Doug was a devoted member of the First Baptist Church in Stephenville. He served the congregation faithfully as a deacon and shared his love for the Word by teaching numerous Sunday School classes.

Doug was preceded in death by his parents, William and Velma Johnson; his older brother, Lt. Col. William Thomas Johnson; his sister, Linda Sue Hughes; and his son-in-law, Jim Graham.

His legacy of love and faith lives on through his beloved wife, Mary Johnson; his children, Janice Graham, Jim Johnson (and his wife, Julie), and Elizabeth Woodson (and her husband, Tannon); his five cherished grandchildren, Michelle Nelson, Emily Vann, Cal Johnson, Nathan Woodson, and Tannon J. Woodson; and his two adored great-grandchildren, Walker and Lainey Vann.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the nursing staff of Hall Three at the Lonestar Rehabilitation and Nursing Center of Stephenville. Their exceptional care, love, and respect brought immense comfort to Doug and his family during his final days.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Doug’s memory to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
