Tarleton centennial continues with chamber mixer, courthouse exhibit

STEPHENVILLE (October 6, 2017) — Tarleton State University continues its centennial celebration as founding member of The Texas A&M University System with a community mixer and an exhibit at the Erath County Courthouse.

The Stephenville Chamber of Commerce MIX, sponsored by the Centennial Steering Committee, takes place from 5 to 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 12, on the grounds of the Stephenville Historical House Museum, 525 E. Washington St.

An expanded exhibit of historical Tarleton artifacts and photographs—dating back to 1917—will be on display in the Carriage House, and the ranch house where the school’s founder, John Tarleton, moved in 1880 will be open for viewing. He lived in the three-room cabin in northern Erath County until his death in 1895.

Proceeds from the community’s annual Sundown on the Square—5 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 14, in downtown Stephenville—will go to the Historical House Museum to help renovate the John Tarleton ranch house.

Tarleton’s centennial exhibit in the Carriage House remains on display through the end of October. Admission is free, but donations are accepted. Museum hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday.

A second free centennial exhibit will be located in the foyer of the Erath County Courthouse from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays beginning Tuesday, Oct. 10.

Exhibits honor the people and events responsible for linking Tarleton’s struggling liberal arts college with The Texas A&M University System. The Texas Legislature approved the partnership following a 3½-year effort by supporters to raise money to purchase 500 acres northeast of Stephenville for use as a college farm and to restore the endowment left by John Tarleton to its original level. The money and land, plus the school’s campus, were donated to the state in exchange for the university’s acceptance by Texas A&M College.
