Mayor Doug Svien and the city council will be honoring Stephenville Women’s Professional Ropers Association (WPRA) athletes Kelsie Chace, Jackie Hobbs-Crawford and J.J. Hampton Tuesday evening as part of the regular city council meeting for February.
It will be an honoring of some of the greatest ropers in the world with Crawford and Hampton having 18 and 17 titles each and Chace being one of the newest and talented young guns on the circuit.
In 2018, Chace won world titles in tie-down and breakaway roping and was the world reserve grand champion behind Crawford who won the all-around title. Hampton’s won six all-around titles starting with one in 1994, and she won a breakaway championship last year too.
“I’m extremely proud to be recognizing these women for their accomplishments and for what they are doing for the city of Stephenville,” Svien said. “When they are out there competing they are representing Stephenville and getting our name out. When they are here and competing, they are helping our economy, and that’s always good.”
Crawford can afford to buy a good deal of fuel this year after winning the largest-ever payout for a breakaway roping competition when she brought home more than $52,000 this month from the WCRA’s Windy City Roundup which was part of a $1 Million rodeo series.
These Stephenville cowgirls are bringing home the hardware in many forms. Hampton’s husband Ricky Prince hit Facebook in December asking if anyone can pull back a bumper-pull horse trailer from Las Vegas because “J.J. did it again!”
Exactly what the city is planning to present is being kept under wraps, but Mayor Svien has promised it will be a special event.
