Sport: SAN ANGELO (January 7, 2014) — Raven McGrath scored the first eight points for Tarleton State (7-3, 1-1) Wednesday night, and the TexAnns never looked back in a 81-71 victory over Angelo State (5-6, 0-1) in a Lone Star Conference battle at the Junnel Center.
McGrath finished with a career high 19 in the first Lone Star Conference win for Tarleton head coach Misty Wilson. The TexAnns salvaged a split out of two road games to begin LSC play after falling at Texas Woman’s. They welcome Texas A&M-Kingsville to Wisdom Gym at 5 p.m. Saturday.
Ikpeaku Iwobi just missed a double-double with nine points and 13 rebounds. She was especially big in the second half with seven points and eight boards.
Tarleton had 13 steals including four by Karli Moore, who scored six points. McGrath had three steals and four assists and Iwobi also stole the ball three times. Kathy Thomas and Breanna Fuller were Tarleton’s other double-digit scorers with 12 and 10, respectively.
ASU committed 23 turnovers and Tarleton cashed them in for 33 points while also outscoring the Rambelles 32-12 off the bench. Fuller’s performance came off the bench, as did eight points from Bailey Wipff and six from travanti Downes. Tarleton seven players with at least six points.
ASU shot 50 percent and out-rebounded Tarleton 35-29, but the TexAnns were 26-30 from the foul stripe while the Rambbelles were just 15-24.
Noteable: With a record of 7-3, Wilson has the best 10-game start of any Tarleton women’s coach in program history…The 81 points scored by Tarleton is the highest by either team in the series since an overtime game in 2006. Neither team had scored 80 in regulation since 2001.
More coming: Quotes from McGrath and Wilson will be added following the Tarleton men’s game in progress.
