STEPHENVILLE (March 11, 2015) — Tarleton State forward Davene Carter will be on ESPN April 2 competing in the College Slam, a dunk contest at the Final Four in Indianapolis.

Carter is from Duncanville, which might as well be spelled Dunkin-ville thanks to the 6-6 senior who doubles as a NCAA Division II nationals qualifier in the high jump.

Carter won the Darkhorse Dunker contest determined by the voting of fans at darkhorsedunker.com. The contest, along with the College Slam, is sponsored by State Farm.

Tarleton athletic communications director Nathan Bural produced a video of Carter’s best practice and game dunks, and submitted it to contest judges who selected the Texan power forward for a spot in the 16-man Darkhorse Dunker bracket. Carter then survived four rounds, with fans voting him past Division I competitors to reach the final and ultimately past West Texas A&M dunk artist Antjuan Ball for the title.

The College Slam isn’t all Carter is planning. He and the Texans are hosting the South Central Region Championship at Wisdom Gym this weekend. Tarleton faces St. Mary’s at 6 p.m. Saturday, with the winner meeting Colorado-Colorado Springs or Colorado School of Mines at 7:30 p.m. Sunday. The championship is 7 p.m. Tuesday, with the winner advancing to the Division II Elite Eight.
