STEPHENVILLE (April 16, 2015) — Tarleton State University’s College of Liberal and Fine Arts, along with the Office of Diversity and Inclusion will host the inaugural “State of American Society” event, Thursday, April 23, featuring guest scholar Dr. Andrew Hartman, associate professor of history, at Illinois State University.
Free and open to the public, The State of American Society event serves to address the most pressing, critical issues of the day. The guest lecture begins at 6:30 p.m. in Room 107 of Tarleton’s Nursing Building. Following Hartman’s speaking engagement there will be a book signing and opportunity to engage him individually.
Hartman, co-founder of the Society for United States Intellectual Historians, and an expert on American education and politics, will speak broadly on the current debates over public education, as well as talk specifically about his most recent book, A War for the Soul of America: History of the Culture Wars. The text is the first comprehensive, full-length historical treatment of the culture wars, a series of public controversies that emerged from the polarized 1960s, dominated headlines during the 1980s and 1990s, and remain with us today.
Hartman teaches all range of 20th Century U.S. history courses and is interested in historiography and the philosophy of history, and regularly teaches at the graduate level. In addition to his scholarly activities, Hartman has published several books and articles, including his first, Education and the Cold War: The Battle for American Society (2008).
Hartman earned his bachelor of arts from the University of New Mexico, and a master of arts and Ph.D. from The George Washington University.
