STEPHENVILLE (May 12, 2015) — Beginning this week, three students will spend a portion of their summer working in congressional offices as part of Tarleton State University’s Washington, D.C. Internship Program.
Selected for this summer’s Congressional Internships are: Kristyn Bunt, senior criminal justice and psychology major from Glen Rose, Texas; TyLynn Payne, junior political science major from Roswell, N.M.; and Marissa Waldon, junior communication studies major from Kerrville, Texas.
Both Bunt and Waldon received invitations to intern with U.S. Rep. Mike Conaway (TX-Dist. 11), while Payne will intern in the offices of U.S. Rep. Steve Pearce (NM-Dist. 2).
During the congressional internships, which run through June 20, students will work in the office of their respective member of Congress. Tasks may include answering constituent phone calls and visiting with guests to the Congressman’s offices, sorting mail, writing letters in response to constituents’ concerns, attending hearings and gathering notes, and giving tours of the capitol.
While in the nation’s capital city, interns will have the opportunity to experience attractions that Washington, D.C. and the surrounding area have to offer.
Bunt went to Washington D.C. during spring break and visited with staff in Rep. Conaway’s office. “I was able to get familiar with the lay of the land and visit the Sam Rayburn Building so we could discuss some of the opportunities I’ll have while interning,” she said. “I want to thank the university for this opportunity. I never dreamed I would be going to D.C., with Tarleton backing me, to get this type of experience first-hand with government.”
Each student received a $7,000 scholarship for their participation in the internship program upon being selected by the D.C. Congressional Internship committee, which is comprised of faculty members from across the university. Committee members include: Dr. Barry Price, Dr. Malcolm Cross, Dr. Christopher Hickman, Karley Goen, Dr. Brian Martinson, Dr. Jeff Breeden and Dr. Eric Morrow, internship program coordinator.
“This $7,000 scholarship covers the students’ living expenses, tuition, travel and housing, and just about everything with the program for them to have this wonderful opportunity,” said Morrow, head of Tarleton’s Department of Social Sciences. “We look forward to having these young women represent us in Washington D.C. because their experiences working in the nation’s capitol will serve them for a lifetime.”
To participate in the Congressional Internship Program, students must have a minimum 3.0 grade point average, have completed 60 semester credit hours of coursework and have completed core government and history courses, including GOVT 2305 and 2306, and HIST 1301 and 1302.
