STEPHENVILLE (June 23, 2015) — Desdemona cowboy Isaac Diaz won twice in saddle-bronc riding last weekend, area team ropers found success in Utah and Nevada and Bobby Mote grabbed the early lead in bareback riding in Reno.
Diaz, who has shot up to ninth in the world rankings, scored 80 points on Pete Carr Pro Rodeo’s Paper Doll for $1,072 at the Big Spring Cowboy Reunion & Rodeo, and also won $617 with a 79-point ride on Stace Smith Pro Rodeo’s No. W41 in the ongoing Mesquite Prorodeo Series.
The area’s other successful pro saddle bronc riders, Stephenville brothers Jacobs and Sterling Crawley, were in the ongoing Reno Rodeo, which concludes this weekend. Jacobs was third with 77 points and Sterling tied for fourth with 76 in the opening round. Jacobs is fourth in the average, covering two broncs for 149 points.
Mote, a four-time world champ won the first round and was fifth in the second in Reno last weekend. He scored 80 points on Western Rodeo’s Another Grey to take the first round, and followed up with a 79-point ride in the second. His 159 points leads the average.
Many of the best team ropers were in the Bob Feist Invitational in Reno, where Stephenville header Luke Brown and Huckabay heeler Kollin VonAhn were fifth in the average to split $21,000. The duo also split $2,000 for placing fourth in the first round, winning $11,500 each at the event.
Clay O’Brien Cooper was fourth in heeling at the BFI, earning $16,500. Travis Graves of Stephenville was seventh in heeling for $7,000, and Paul Eaves of Huckabay was 10th for $3,500. Huckabay header Charly Crawford and Dublin heeler Shay Carroll finished 14th for $2,500 each.
Lipan heeler Patrick Smith took second in the opening round, when he and Trevor Brazile stopped the clock in 6.67 seconds to earn $2,875 each. Brown and VonAhn finished the first round in 7.34.
Morgan Mill heeler Dakota Kirchenschlager and Andrews header JoJo LeMond continued their recent hot streak by winning the first round in 5.1 seconds and taking second in round four in 5.13. Their combined winnings from those rounds was $7,000 each.
Brown and VonAhn were fourth in round one fifth in the average at the Strawberry Days Rodeo in Pleasant Grove, Utah, where they earned a total of $1,084 each. Jim Ross Cooper won round two for $1,227, while Stephenville teammates David Key and Martin Lucero tied for third in the average to earn $1,047 per man. Brown and VonAhn were fifth in the average for $492 each.
Brown and VonAhn split third and fourth in the second round at Reno, while Stephenville header Turtle Powell was fifth.
In tie-down roping, Stephenville’s own Marty Yates was fifth in the first round at Pleasant Grove, earning $452 in 8.2 seconds. Former Tarleton cowboy Reese Riemer was fifth in round two, picking up $452 in 8.3.
Kelly Clifton tied for sixth in the barrel race at Big Spring, earning $350 in 16.88 seconds.
