BRYAN (July 9, 2015) — Stephenville didn’t exactly start on the best note at the Adidas Texas 7v7 Championship at Veterans Park Thursday afternoon, dropping its Division II Pool A opener 54-18 to reigning 4A Division I champion Navasota.

Navasota scored in three plays to begin the contest, but Stephenville answered in just two snaps with sophomore quarterback Easton Jones going deep down the sideline to senior receiver Darian Brown.

The Yellow Jackets even had a chance at an early lead after making a defensive stand on the goal line.

But Navasota used a quick three-and-out to get the ball back and score the next 14 points for a 21-6 advantage before Jones hit Nowell for a TD to cut it to 21-12.

The Rattlers ripped off 26 consecutive points with the help of three interceptions, one of which was returned for a touchdown. By the time Jones found Dylan Couch for the third Stephenville TD, the game was out of reach.

The Jackets return to the field at 3 p.m. for their second pool game against White Oak, a 3A school from east of Tyler. Navasota, playing just 20 miles from home, battles Yoakum at 3 p.m.

Stephenville likely must defeat both White Oak and Yoakum – at 5 p.m. – to advance to the championship bracket on Saturday. The top two from each pool contend for the championship while the bottom two move on to the consolation bracket.
