ERATH COUNTY (July 31, 2015) — Officials say distraction was the cause of the accident that killed Rodrigo Avalos-Hernandez, 52 of Stephenville, on US Highway 377 north of Stephenville, Thursday, July 30.
Avalos-Hernandez was a passenger in a 2008 Chevy Equinox that was traveling southbound on US 377 at approximately 4 p.m. when Justin B. Wade, 19, of Stephenville was “distracted by his cell phone and drove into the wrong lane of the highway.”
Wade’s 2000 Chevrolet Astro van collided with the Equinox, driven by Eric Avalos-Medrano, of Stephenville, causing it to flip. Both drivers were taken to Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital in Stephenville where they were treated and released. Avalos-Hernandez was pronounced dead at the scene by Justice of the Peace Shawnee Bass at 4:45 p.m.
DPS officials say the crash is still under investigation.
