Decatur, Bryan eliminate Bees from Volleypalooza tourney

(August 29, 2015) — Stephenville (12-16) was outscored by a total of two points over the course of losses to two-time reigning 4A champ Decatur and 5A Bryan Saturday morning in the Volleypalooza tournament in Leander.

Decatur and Stephenville put on a potential playoff preview including a classic third set in which the Honeybees fought off a 9-2 deficit and almost won the match. Decatur eliminated Stephenville in straight sets in a regional quarterfinal last season, and won Saturday, 25-17, 17-25, 25-23.

The match against Bryan was just as close, including the same third-set final. Bryan won 25-20, 25-22, 25-23, eliminating the Bees from the event.



Stephenville welcomes Granbury to Gandy Gym at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, following a 5:30 start to sub-varsity play.

The Honeybees were balanced on the stat sheet, especially against Decatur. Seniors Kourtney Seaton, Mikayla Hobbs and Kaleigh Conger each had nine kills, while Hobbs also collected seven digs and Conger six. Seaton added two blocks.

Kerstin Fredrickson had eight kills, seven digs and three assists against Decatur, while Chelsea Gillespie doubled up with 23 assists and 12 digs. Nicona Stilwell contributed six kills and a pair of blocks, Kylee Ponder made 21 digs and Taylor Garber had 11 assists.

Hobbs had a strong double-double with 11 kills and 11 digs against Bryan. Conger had seven kills and seven digs and Seaton added six kills and a robust seven blocks. Fredrickson had six kills and three blocks, Garber 11 assists and six digs, Gillespie six assists and four digs and Ponder made 10 digs.

Stephenville is now 3-2 against 4A opponents including powers Decatur, Liberty Hill and Lorena. The Bees are 9-14 against 5A and 6A competition.
