ERATH COUNTY (September 4, 2015) — Just before 6:45 a.m. Friday, an off duty dispatcher for the Erath County Sheriff’s Office alerted officers that Cody Miller, an EMT and first responder out of Morgan Mill, was sending text messages indicating he was having personal issues and wanted to hurt himself.

According to early reports, Miller said he had a rifle and possibly other weapons in the home. Erath County Sheriff Tommy Bryant said Miller told the dispatcher he would shot at any first responder who pulled into his property.

“Safety is always an important factor in dangerous situations like this,” Bryant said Friday morning. “We sent officers to the area and discovered Miller’s home was less than a block from the Morgan Mill School on FM 1188. That gave this situation the potential to be extremely dangerous and our law enforcement did everything necessary to protect the children nearby and the residents of Erath County.”

Bryant said when officers arrived on scene and realized how close the children were to Miller, they got everyone inside quickly and locked the school down. Miller fired on at least one officer who responded to the report, hitting a ECSO cruiser, but not the officer.

Deputies were able to take Miller into custody quickly and by 8:45 a.m., he was under arrest but not yet back to the Erath County Jail. Bryant advised that Morgan Mill ISD is no longer on lockdown and no injures were reported with the incident.
