ALVARADO (September 25, 2015) — Austin Morriel was a workhorse and Alvarado (4-1) beat Stephenville (2-3) for the first time in eight tries Friday night.

Morriel rushed 34 times for 221 yards and scored twice in the third quarter to help Alvarado pull away in the 42-27 victory at Charles Head Stadium.

Alvarado raced to a 21-0 lead by the end of the first quarter, with 163 total yards to 28 by Stephenville, which responded with touchdown drives covering 76 and 93 yards in the second quarter, the second following an Alvarado fumble inside the Stephenville red zone.

Alvarado was clinging to a 21-14 lead at halftime, then used a healthy dose of Morriel and a likely 14-point swing beginning with an interception in its end zone, to pull away in the third quarter.

Morriel plunged over the goal line from a yard out to end a more than seven minute touchdown drive to begin the third. Stephenville looked as if it would respond quickly with a 51 yard kickoff return by Josh Nowell and a 36 yard pass to Malachi Taylor, but Bradley Boulton intercepted a pass in the end zone, and four plays later Morriel broke free for his biggest run of the night – a 51 yard TD to make it 35-14 late in the third.

Easton Jones hit Darian Brown with touchdown passes covering 15 and 38 yards in the fourth, but Alvarado scored in between on a gutsy play action pass call on fourth and one to keep its distance. Blake Boyd hit Colten Svendsen with the one-yard TD that put the game away.

Boyd also scrambled 44 yards for a score to help Alvarado built its big first quarter lead. The other two first quarter touchdowns were runs of 4 and 37 yards by Alonzo Shaw, who finished with 106 yards on 13 carries.

The second quarter Stephenville touchdowns came on a 15 yard pass from Jones to Nowell and a fumble recovery in the end zone by offensive lineman Conner Warmerdam. Chapman was trying to fight his way across the goal line when the ball popped out, and Warmerdam dove on top of it in the end zone.

Stephenville is idle next week and begins District 3-4A Division I play against Brownwood on homecoming night at Memorial Stadium – Friday, October 9.
