STEPHENVILLE (October 22, 2015) — A piece of Tarleton State history has been stolen.

And it was taken over homecoming weekend just blocks from the university’s main campus in Stephenville.

The original hand-made Texan Rider flag belonging to Charlene Boucher, widow of the late Buddy Fornes, a former Tarleton State football coach, was stolen from in front of her house on Mockingbird Lane in Stephenville last weekend.

Buddy Fornes, head coach at Tarleton from 1973-82, led the Texans to their first Texas Intercollegiate Athletic Association championship in 1977. Charlene hand-made the flag for use by the original Texan Rider, and since its retirement, it has spent game days flying over Mockingbird Lane for about 40 seasons.

“We moved here in 1973 and have never had any kind of problem like this. Since my mom made that flag she’s put it out every football game day ever since,” said Kyle Fornes. “I figure it was just some college kids thinking they were stealing a $20 flag form Barefoot Athletics or something like that.”

All Kyle Fornes and his mother want is for the flag to be returned.

“We aren’t wanting to see anyone get in trouble,” Kyle Fornes said. “All we want is to get the flag back.”

So a piece of Tarleton history can fly along Mockingbird lane for many more game days to come.
