(October 31, 2015) — Kyle Washington accounted for six touchdowns and Angelo State (6-3,  scored the final 36 points in a 57-24 rout of Tarleton State (2-6, 1-5) in a game surrounded by Lone Star Conference Playoff implications at LeGrand Stadium Saturday.

Angelo State punched its ticket to the championship bracket of the league playoffs, while Tarleton takes the No. 6 overall seed into the consolation bracket. The Texans host Texas A&M-Kingsville in a consolation semifinal next Saturday.

Washington’s career night took the attention off Tarleton receiver Le’Nard Meyers, who scored three touchdowns in the second quarter and gave the Texans a 21-14 lead at halftime. Meyers made 12 receptions for 150 yards, tying a school record with his 11th 100-yard receiving game.



Washington accounted for three touchdowns of 60 yards or more, the last a 66-yard run on an option keeper to tie the game early in the third. Tarleton led 24-21 following a 37-yard Blake Barnes field goal to end the ensuing drive, but Angelo State scored the final five touchdowns.

Washington was just 11-27 passing, but the completions were big – often huge – for 337 yards and five scores to go with his long TD sprint. He rushed 14 times for 155 yards, accounting for 492 yards while leading the offense to 684 total yards.

Washington began the scoring with a 75-yard TD pass to Talon Smith, and struck from even deeper in the second quarter with a 91-yard pitch and catch to Donovan Thompson for 14-7 lead. Thompson caught five total passes for 187 yards and three TDs.

Meyers tied the game at 7-7 with a 31-yard TD from Zed Woerner just more than a minute into the second, tied it again on a 14-yard catch just more than four minutes later, and hauled in a short pass before making two defenders miss and racing away for a 66-yard TD and a 21-14 Tarleton lead with 28 seconds left in the half.

It was part of a busy half for Woerner, who was 25-41 for 302 yards, three scores and an interception at the intermission. He would later throw a second pick to set up an ASU touchdown.

Woerner finished 40-64 for 396 yards, including 15-23 for 94 yards in the second half. Cooper Cole hauled in 14 catches for 88 yards and Bubba Tandy six or 81.

Cody Burtscher and Chase Varnado each had 11 tackles for the Texans. Burtscher also had a sack.
