Waldine “Deane” (Short) White, 99, went to be with our Lord on Sunday, November 1, 2015 after a brief illness.
Deane was born on August 14, 1916 in Bunyan, Erath County, Texas to Edward and Golda (Robinson) Short. She was the third to the youngest of 14 children and was full of stories about growing up with that many siblings. In 1917, her family moved to Hale Center, Texas.
It was in Hale Center that she saw a handsome young man standing on the corner one day and she told her friend that he was the most handsome man she had ever seen. Deane married Harmon White on April 11, 1936 on a rainy day in Portales, New Mexico. They lived in Cotton Center, Texas and had three children; Patricia, J.C., and Judith. They were active members of the Cotton Center community until the moved to Stephenville in 1978. Deane moved to Abilene in 2005.
Deane was an active member of the Church of Christ in every community in which she lived, including Graham Street Church of Christ in Stephenville and Hillcrest Church of Christ in Abilene.
She was an accomplished artist who won numerous shows with her landscapes and gorgeous still-life’s. She also was quite the competitor who loved playing any kind of game and enjoyed watching her children, grandchildren and even, great-grandchildren competing in various sports.
Deane was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years in 1997, a granddaughter-in-law, Angie Lee in 2003.
Those left to cherish her memory are daughter, Patricia Varner and Cleddy of Abilene, son, J.C. White of Clarenden, and youngest daughter, Judith Lee and Steve of Lubbock; grandchildren; Kevin and Chandra Varner and Vicki, Daniel Andrews, Paige and E.Z. Wadsworth, Holly Lee, Jeb and Leslie White, Eric and Connie Lee, and Jonathan and Katie White, 24 great-grandchildren, 4 great-great-grandchildren, and a brother that is 102 years old.
Memorial services for Mrs. White will be at Hillcrest Church of Christ in Abilene, Texas, Tuesday, November 3, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. Visitation will be from 2:30-3:00 p.m. at Lacy Funeral Home in Stephenville, burial will follow at 3:00 p.m. at the Ramsey Cemetery.
