(November 17, 2015) — Bill Brooks said post players Coby Vanden Berge and Evan Moody would be the leaders of his shorthanded team early in the season, and the first-year Stephenville head coach was spot on.

Vanden Berge scattered 17 points and Moody scored all of his seven in the fourth, when Stephenville wiped out a seven-point deficit to defeat Gatesville, 38-34, on the road in a season opener Tuesday evening.

Sophomore guard Sid Davis also scored seven for Stephenville, going 7-8 from the foul stripe. The Yellow Jackets were 13-18 from the line as a team.

Other scorers for Stephenville were Clay Krause with three, Merit Holstein two and Will Beaty two.

Stephenville trailed 16-9 after one but battled to within 20-16 at the intermission. The Jackets still trailed 32-27 after three before rallying late.

Both teams were shorthanded because their football teams are in this weekend’s 4A Division I area playoffs.

Stephenville visits Burleson next Monday then hosts Springtown on Tuesday.
