PALO PINTO COUNTY (November 16, 2015) — Speed was the main factor in a three-vehicle accident took the life of a Weatherford man and diverted traffic for several hours Monday.
According to DPS Trooper Richard Hunter, first responders were dispatched to an accident on US Highway 281, north of FM 4, at approximately 1 p.m. and Colt Allen Bowens, 32 of Weatherford, was pronounced deceased at the scene. Hunter said weather was also a factor as “the 2001 Ford pickup, traveling at an unsafe speed for the weather, hydroplaned and crossed into oncoming traffic, striking a 2004 Ford pickup head-on.”
The report from Hunter stated, “The initial investigation indicates a 2001 red Ford pickup was traveling south on US 281 at a speed that was unsafe for the rainy weather and wet road conditions. The 2001 Ford pickup, driven by Colby Wayne Black, 19 of Grapevine, hydroplaned and crossed into oncoming traffic, striking a 2004 grey Ford pickup head-on. Black’s vehicle then spun and struck a 2001 white Ford pickup, also traveling north on 281. The driver of the 2004 grey Ford pickup was pronounced deceased at the scene, and Black was transported to Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital in Stephenville with undisclosed injuries.”
Neither the driver of the white Ford, Scott Jeremy Sines, 43 of Dublin, nor his passenger, Jennifer Qualls, 18 of Dublin, were injured, Hunter reported. Adding that all persons were secured by seat belts at the time of the crash.
Hunter said the investigation is still ongoing, but no charges have been filed at this time.
According to DPS reports, Palo Pinto County EMS, Palo Pinto County VFD, Palo Pinto County Sheriff’s Department, Erath County EMS, Erath County Volunteer Fire Rescue, Morgan Mill VFD, Lipan VFD and Cross Timbers First Responders were dispatched and arrived to aid Texas DPS with the crash site.
