This is the time of year when many Erath County residents will head to the Metroplex for some serious shopping.  You and your purchases can quickly become targets.  There are some things that you can do to make your shopping trips safer:

  • Pay attention to what is going on around you.
  • Always lock your car.
  • Lock all your purchases in the trunk or cover them with a blanket.  Never leave purchases in plain sight.
  • Don’t leave a purse or wallet in a vehicle.  Keep valuables with you.
  • Don’t leave a purse open, in a car, or unattended even for a moment.
  • Leave any extra credit cards at home.
  • Be discreet about the amount of cash you are carrying.
  • Carry your wallet or checkbook in a front pants pocket to make it more difficult for a pickpocket team.
  • Have a meeting place for all to go to if you get separated while shopping.  This allows for a safe meeting spot and no one will be separated for long.
  • Carry a recent photo of the children with you in case you need to get help from security.  Make note of what each child is wearing that day.
  • Remind your children that police and security guards are there to help you.  If you get lost or have a problem tell one of them.
  • Never allow or send a child to go to the bathroom alone.
