STEPHENVILLE (February 8, 2016) – Saturday afternoon the Stephenville American Legion Auxiliary Unit held their 10th annual Four Chaplains Program at the American Legion Hall.
This ceremony honors the legendary acts of selflessness exhibited by the four chaplains aboard the U.S. Army Transport Dorchester. February 3 marked the 70th anniversary of the sinking of the Dorchester. This day was declared by Congress as Four Chaplains Day because the four chaplains went down with the ship after giving their life jackets away to save other passengers.
Stephenville Unit 240 President Kathy Geffre welcomed guests, and Commander Burton Smith led attendees in the Pledge of Allegiance. Students in Stephenville Student Council participated in the program by reading the biographies of the four chaplains and lighting four candles in their honor.
