(February 16, 2016) — Nothing ever comes easy between Lingleville and Huckabay, and Lingleville had to know Tuesday’s regular-season and 18-3A district finale at HHS would be no different.
The Cardinals soared to a 33-23 lead, but had to overcome 24 points including three late free throws by JW Weiss and a 3-pointer by Eduardo Sanchez that left everyone biting their nails until the very end.
Huckabay dominated the third quarter, 15-3, for a 38-36 lead entering the fourth, then scored the first point of the final period for a three-point margin. But Lingleville had an answer in the form of nine straight points for a 45-39 lead.
Jarod Hagood converted an old-fashioned 3-point play in the paint and at the line to tie the score at 39-39, then struck again to put Lingleville up for good. Two Lingleville free throws and a Bailey Fenn bucket concluded the run, which proved decisive.
Hagood had 14 points and 11 boards for Lingleville, doubling up inside for the second time against the Indians in district play. Griffin led all Cardinal scorers with 20.
Huckabay kept fighting, cutting into a 48-41 deficit with three Weiss free throws after he was fouled shooting from deep. Colbe Stoker hit a Lingleville free throw for a five-point margin before the Sanchez 3-pointer cut it to 49-47. Stoker closed the scoring with another foul shot and Lingleville held on.
Stoker registered eight points and seven assists. He and Griffin each had four steals.
