(STEPHENVILLE) — It’s home opener time for the Honeybees, who are getting to make their 2016 McCleskey Field debut a day earlier than expected.
Stephenville welcomes Godley for its first home game of the young season at 6:30 p.m. Monday, following a 5 p.m. junior varsity contest. The home opener was originally slated for Tuesday, but was moved due to conflicting basketball playoff schedules as well as the probability of inclement weather.
Stephenville (2-5) is coming off a rocky performance in the Johnson County Invitational in Cleburne, where they won twice and dropped four games last weekend. The Bees saw late leads slip away in a 5-2 loss to Wichita Falls Rider and a 6-4 loss to Alvarado, both Saturday.
Stephenville will be without leading hitter Emily Miller for an undetermined amount of time after the hard-hitting first baseman suffered a dislocated elbow. She is hitting .429 early on.
Sami Shaffer is batting .421 with a homer and leads the team with nine RBIs. Jessica Howell and Nadine Arredondo also have home runs this sason. Howell is hitting .353 with six RBIs and seven runs scored. Arredondo is hitting .333 with a team-best eight runs scored.
Julia Flores has worked all but one inning for the Bees this season, allowing 12 earned runs – 24 total – over 36.1 innings for a 2.31 ERA. The sophomore has issued 50 strikeouts and just eight walks. She’s made seven starts and is allowing less than six hits per start.
