STEPHENVILLE (February 25, 2016) – For more than half a century, a local social service organization has served up a flapjack fundraiser that can’t be beat.

“When I was a kid, my dad, Morris Gifford, was an early member of the Kiwanis Club,” Kenneth Gifford, current Kiwanis Club president said. “He opened the store (Gifford TV & Electronics) in 1953 and that was about when they started the pancake supper at the (Stephenville City Park) rec hall.”

Fast forward to 2016 and club members, scouts and leaders from Boy Scouts Troop 18 and Cubs Scouts Pack 18 and a few other spatula-wielding community members will fire up the griddles for the Kiwanis Club of Stephenville’s Annual Pancake Supper. The breakfast-food feast will be held 6-8 p.m. Thursday, March 3 at the Stephenville High School cafeteria.

Pulling off the event is no small feat, considering the size of the crowd that turns out for the all-you-can-eat meal, featuring piping hot pancakes, bacon, sausage, orange juice and coffee.

“It’s a great time for community members to get together and enjoy a fun time,” Gifford said, adding that serving breakfast for supper, a tradition of the worldwide Kiwanis organization, isn’t just about the food.

It’s about raising funds and raising spirits across the community.

“We have a number of organizations that we support every year,” he said. “We are the charter organization for Boy Scout Troop 18 and Cub Scout Pack 18, support the Rainbow Room and have a program called Terrific Kids at Chamberlin Elementary.”

Stephenville Kiwanis also sponsor a youth baseball team and provide Christmas gifts for children in need.

“Internationally, Kiwanis have a goal of helping children,” Gifford said. “Stephenville Kiwanis have the same goal here in our community.”

Tickets for the pancake supper are $8 per person. They can be purchased at the door or bought in advance at Gifford TV & Electronics, Bruner Dodge-Chrysler, Wood’s Furniture or from any club member.

The event also features a silent auction, with all proceeds being delivered directly to local scouts.

Individuals interested in obtaining more information on Stephenville Kiwanis are encouraged to attend a weekly meeting, held at noon every Tuesday at the Morris Gifford Scout Hut, located off of Lennox Street.
