STEPHENVILLE (February 25, 2016) — Iredell had a plan for containing Huckabay senior guard JW Weiss, but the Dragons should have also accounted for his backcourt mate, Eduardo Sanchez.
Sanchez fired in four second-quarter 3-pointers, three from the right wing and one from the left, to power the Indians to a 20-7 halftime advantage that Iredell’s best second-half efforts couldn’t overcome. Sanchez scored 14 and Huckabay went on to win, 34-22 in a Region III-A boys quarterfinal at Gandy Gym Thursday.
And exert every effort the Dragons did, leaving the box-and-one that was used on Weiss in the first half in favor of a straight zone look that stymied the Indians long enough for Iredell – powered by consecutive 3-pointers early in the third – to pull within 24-19 less than a minute into the fourth.
But Huckabay had an answer, hitting a free throw then stretching it to 27-19 on a reverse layup by Weiss, who scored 11 including seven in the fourth. At that point, his biggest shot was yet to come. Weiss buried a right corner 3-point dagger with 2:50 remaining, and Huckabay head coach Bryan Blackwell called timeout after a Sanchez layup made it a 13-point lead just less than a minute later and the margin grew to 34-19 before Iredell scored final three.
Other Huckabay scorers were Taylor Lopez with five, Gage Dowell two and Tyler Stegall two.
