Honeybees amass 48 runs in three pool-play shutouts

SHS begins Gold Bracket play at 9:30 a.m. Saturday

STEPHENVILLE (February 26, 2016) — Stephenville (6-5) amassed 48 runs on 57 hits including 12 for extra bases while slamming Lancaster 18-0, Mabank 15-0 and Eastland 15-0 in pool play of the Honeybee Invitational at Stephenville City Park Friday.

Stephenville begins Gold Bracket play at 9:30 a.m. Saturday against Comanche.

Sophomore pitcher Julia Flores pitched an abbreviated no hitter in three innings of work against Mabank. For the day she worked eight shutout innings, allowing just four hits while striking out 13.

There were several superlatives at the plate. Nadine Arredondo and Sami Shaffer were each 8-for-9, Jessica Howell was 7-for-9 and Kali Smith was 7-for-10. Aredondo had a home run and triple on her way to seven RBI and seven runs scored. Shaffer tallied three doubles and finished with eight runs and six RBI. Smith had four doubles and a triple, scoring eight times and driving in four runs, while Howell had a double, scored five runs and collected five RBI.

There are 24 teams divided into six four-team pools to comprise the tournament. Three pools – 12 teams – played Thursday followed by the remaining pools on Friday. All 24 teams will be in Gold, Silver or Bronze bracket action on Saturday.
