STEPHENVILLE (March 8, 2016) — Dr. W. Stephen (Steve) Damron has been selected dean of Tarleton State University’s College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences following a national search. Damron begins his new duties July 1, pending approval by The Texas A&M University System Board of Regents.

He currently is assistant dean of academic programs for Oklahoma State University’s College of Agricultural Sciences & Natural Resources.

“Steve Damron has an exceptional record of teaching, scholarship and service,” says Tarleton Provost Dr. Karen Murray. “Steve’s strong commitment to student success and to higher education makes him a valuable addition to our academic leadership team.”

Damron has served in his current position at OSU since 2011. He joined the school’s Animal Science Department in 1988 after teaching at the University of Hawaii at Hilo and the University of Wisconsin at River Falls. His teaching career is characterized by rigorous courses on a variety of topics and includes five distance education classes that annually enrolls several hundred students from across the U.S. and around the world.

As a faculty member, Damron is known for his care and concern for students. While at OSU, he served as faculty advisor to 13 student organizations. For many years, he coordinated the Animal Science Department’s largest scholarship program. In addition to service as the department’s teaching coordinator, diversity coordinator and research scholar co-coordinator, he has served on numerous higher education, professional and community committees and councils.

In its fifth edition, Damron’s textbook—Introduction to Animal Science: Global, Biological, Social and Industry Perspectives—is used extensively in the U.S. and abroad. There is an international edition and a Chinese translation.

Damron says he was drawn to Tarleton because of the respect that the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences has nationally and its commitment to student success.

“Tarleton State University as a whole, and the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences in particular, cares for students and is committed to their success in a way that I very much admire,” Damron says. “That made the decision to join the Tarleton family easy for me and my wife, Rebecca. I look forward to helping Tarleton maintain and enhance its reputation for excellence in all things. We love Stephenville and are ready to roll up our sleeves and get started.”

Rebecca is director of the OSU Writing Center and a member of the university’s English faculty. Their son, Joshua, is a doctoral candidate at the University of Michigan, and their daughter and son-in-law, Aubryana and Cameron Peterson, live in Dallas. Aubryana is an event planner, and Cameron is a police officer.

In his new role as dean of Tarleton’s College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, Damron will oversee one of the 25 largest programs in the nation, with 1,900 students. Tarleton operates the only university dairy in the state and is home to one of only two four-year vet tech programs in Texas.

Damron earned his bachelor’s in agricultural science from the University of Tennessee at Martin and his master’s degree and doctorate in ruminant nutrition from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. During his career, he has received 26 teaching and advising awards and recognitions.
