There will be a celebration of the life of Dr. Gay Wakefield on Friday, March 18 at 2 p.m. in the Theater (RM 104) of the Clyde Wells Fine Arts Building. 

A Fort Worth native, Gay graduated from Texas Christian University where she received her Bachelor of Fine Arts in speech education and her master’s in speech communication.

Her doctorate in education is from Texas A&M at Commerce where her major was supervision, curriculum and instruction.

Gay was Director of Public Relations and Advertising for Hyatt Regency Dallas, Reunion Tower, Union Station; a copywriter for the DBG&H agency and Instructor of Strategic Planning for the U.S. Department of Defense Information School.  After teaching at Southern Illinois University and Butler University, she returned to TCU in 1997 where, until 2006, she was the Director of the Center for Professional Communication in the M.J. Neeley School of Business.  She came to Tarleton State University where she was an associate professor and area coordinator for the Public Relations and Event Management program in 2007. Wakefield also had directed academic assessment at the university for five years.

Survivors include her daughter, Hollis, a sister, Karen Wakefield Salisbury, her husband, Tom, of Kansas City (MO) and their daughters, Jennifer Salisbury (Columbia, MO) and Kathleen Salisbury (North Hollywood, CA).

The family established a scholarship fund in the name of Dr. Wakefield through Tarleton’s Office of Development and has asked that donations be made to the scholarship in lieu of flowers or other memorials.
