STEPHENVILLE (April 1, 2016) — Stephenville applied pressure the whole way, and finally, on the 11th of 17 shots on goal, broke through for the only score in a Region I-4A area playoff win over Pampa at Memorial Stadium Friday afternoon.
The 1-0 victory advances Stephenville to the regional quarterfinals and a date with Brownwood or Borger.
Savannah Alford finally broke through in the 53rd minute, hammering one from about 30 yards out and straight away. The fact Stephenville did not score more was the biggest surprise of the day.
The Honeybees missed opportunities at headers in the box and were just high a number of times. Alford missed just upstairs and just wide, Codi Beyer had a shot just upstairs and Julie Morken narrowly missed twice that way and put another off the cross bar.
That’s how much of the afternoon went for Stephenville. Of course, the Bees also played most the afternoon without star striker Bayleigh Chaviers, who made her first appearance in the 49th minute because she is nursing a stress fracture in a foot.
Alford was dominant all day, sweeping away any chance Pampa had to even approach Stephenville keeper Jordyn Howle, who is credited for the shutout without facing a shot. Pampa moved the ball past midfield just once in the second half and even then never posed a threat.
