STEPHENVILLE (April 29, 2016) — More than 350 items will be auctioned off, some silent and others live, at the 44th annual Stephenville Optimist Club auction today at Wisdom Gym.
The silent auction begins at 5:30 p.m. with the live auction starting at 6:30 at Wisdom Gym. The event has topped $40,000 each of the past several years and every penny goes back to local youth.
Items range from garden hoses and gift cards to sides of beef and large storage containers valued in the thousands.
Patrons who do not wish to attend the auction but still want to participate can watch from home on Northland Cable Channel 9. Call (254) 918-7602, (254) 918-7603 or (254) 918-7604 to place bids.
The Stephenville Optimist Club is in its 50th year supporting local youth, and the auction is the main source of revenue to support their activities.
“In the past 44 years the Stephenville Optimist auction has raised well over $1,000,000 and we are now working on our second million,” wrote club president Cheryl Hatton for the Optimist auction tabloid. “The success of our auction is once again vital to our continued efforts to improve the quality of life to our kids.”
In the past year, the Optimist club has supported a number of large projects, including a $10,000 donation to the Stephenville Soccer Association to help pave their parking lot, $10,000 to the local chapter of Girls Scouts of America for renovations to their scout hut, $6,500 for a new scoreboard at Optimist Softball Field in City Park and a new covered playground strutter at Optimist Jaycee Park.
