TexAnns hold off Texas Wesleyan in first exhibition

STEPHENVILLE (November 2, 2016) — Tarleton State was pushed to the wire by NAIA Division I Texas Wesleyan Wednesday evening, but held on for a 67-63 win in an exhibition at Wisdom Gym.

The next time the TexAnns take the court, they will be at Gregory Gym in Austin taking on the University of Texas Lady Longhorns. That exhibition is set for 4 p.m. Sunday at Gregory Gym in Austin.

Tiara Tatum scored 16 points and hit a timely left-win 3-pointer for a 62-58 lead with 2:24 remaining and a layup that made it 64-50 with 1:42 to go. She added a free throw in the final minute, giving her six points in the final 144 seconds.

Wesleyan never led but tied the game at 47-47 with the opening basket of the fourth quarter and again at 51-51 on a 3-pointer by Ashlie Bruner with 7:10 to play. Shelby Mankins put Tarleton back ahead for good on a layup with 6:17 to play.

Tarleton led by six on two occasions in the third quarter, but could never pull away. Wesleyan scored six of the final eight to end the third before tying it 12 seconds into the fourth.

Travanti Downes was also in double figures with 11 for Tarleton. Ikpeaku Iwobi scored nine points and grabbed 10 boards. Mackenzie Hailey also scored nine and Mankins added eight.

Bruner netted 18 points and Bailey Brodnaz added 15 with nine boards for Wesleyan. Katelynn Threats had 11 points and eight boards, and Bria Jackson also scored 11.

Tarleton led by just three at intermission despite a 9-2 run to begin the second quarter. A top-of-the key 3-pointer by Hailey opened up a 27-16 lead 4:54 before the half, but Wesleyan Broadnax knocked down a layup and a tip-in to ignite a 11-4 run by Wesleyan that cut it to 30-27 at half.

Tatum had seven points and a pair of assists by halftime for the TexAnns. Bruner had 10 before intermission for Wesleyan.
