STEPHENVILLE (December 13, 2016) — A new student named Ashley received a warm welcome to Stephenville and Jaylin Resendez has a shiny new medal.

Resendez went out of her way, say Central Elementary School officials, to stress one of the districts core values – relationship – when ‘Ashley’ (no last name given) showed up as a new student at the Stephenville campus, even helping the newcomer survive ‘Rodeo Day.’

Superintendent Matt Underwood noted that an event-filled ‘Rodeo Day,’ to a new student unfamiliar with the rodeo heritage so strongly on display in Stephenville, can be scary, but thanks to Resendez, Ashley fit right in.

Resendez helped Ashley through Rodeo Day, and the next day, Jaylin even gave up her first choice of a fun station to be Ashley was shown all the stations, then sat with her and shared what “buddy reading” is all about.

At their regular monthly meeting Monday, Stephenville ISD Board of Trustees recognized Resendez’s sacrifice to welcome the new student and build a relationship with her, as board president Dr. Ann Calahan placed a shiny gold core values medal around the young student’s neck.

A bit sheepish and all smiles, Resendez, shook hands with Calahan and accepted her medal, kicking off a long list of proclamations recognizing students for their achievements and selflessness.

Stephenville High School cheerleaders were also recognized and presented certificates for showing the core value of initiative. Indeed, the cheerleaders took the initiative to make a brief video supporting the Iraan community, cheerleaders and Braves football team. Iraan suffered tragedy when its cheerleader bus wrecked on the way home from a state playoff game. A co-sponsor driving the cheerleaders was killed and several cheerleaders were injured, The Braves will play in the state final this weekend.

The longest list of student achievements belonged, as usual, to the SHS Future Farmers of America program. A couple dozen of the many students were on hand, and Underwood read through a long list of state and national qualifiers.
