STEPHENVILLE (December 13, 2016) — There are no guarantees on the hardwood. Whether you have already beaten an opponent or not.
Stephenville knocked off Benbrook on its way to the consolation final in the Brock Showcase a couple weeks ago, and also controlled a scrimmage with Benbrook before the season.
But on Tuesday, at Gandy Gym, the Yellow Jackets trailed by as much as 18 in the second half, and a late charge that cut it to seven in the final minute wasn’t enough as Benbrook, with the help of a missed layup by Stephenville and a couple closing-second buckets on its end, held on for a 63-52 win.
Keevon Kennedy scored 22 and Quintan Jackson 17 for Benbrook, a first-year varsity program coached by former Tarleton player and student assistant JD Robinson.
Will Beaty scored all of his 10 points in the second quarter and Coby Vandenberg scattered his 10 throughout the remaining three periods to lead Stephenville. Blake Aragon added nine points, Easton Jones eight, Cole Pettit five, Braden Hayes three, Merit Holstein three, Clay Krause three and Sid Davis one.
