VENUS (January 3, 2016) — Stephenville shut down Venus for six minutes straight minutes of the second half, using an 12-0 run to take control on its way to a 48-37 road win in 8-4A district action Tuesday evening.

Venus led 25-24 before a Mason Holstein free throw with 3:02 remaining in the third, and the Bulldogs didn’t score again until a breakaway layup with 5:38 remaining in the game. In between, Holstein and Will Beaty each hit floaters in the lane, Vandenberg made a free throw then Merit Holstein knocked down a pair of free throws and a reverse layup to send the Jackets to the fourth leading 34-25.

An offensive rebound and put back by Vandenberg stretched it to 36-25 before Venus finally scored with 5:38 remaining in the fourth, then Stephenville tacked on five more to make it an extended 16-2 run. Four of those came from Vandenberg on buckets in the paint, and Mason Holstein tacked on a free throw in between them.

It was 41-27 with 3:52 left and Venus got no closer until hitting a meaningless 3-pointer at the buzzer.
