STEPHENVILLE (January 16, 2017) — Stephenville’s girls won their Friday tournament match in Saginaw, while the boys team fought to a draw in its last tournament battle at Midlothian Heritage.

The Honeybees used shutout defense to top Fort Worth Western Hills, 1-0, but the Stephenville girls came one point shy of qualifying for a spot in the Saturday championship. The goal was scored by freshman Gracie Bales with assist from classmate Ciara Johnston.

The Yellow Jackets battled Mineral Wells – well, some of the Jackets did, any way – to a 2-2 draw. Stephenville earned the draw despite being shorthanded with five starters out. The two goals were scored by Kevin Martinez and Hunter Melton.

The Honeybees host Granbury at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday on the pitch at Lem Brock Field, while the Yellow Jackets visit Fort Worth Trimble Tech at the same time. Both matches will follow junior varsity competition.

The JV girls take strong momentum into their match with Granbury Tuesday after inning their division of the tournament in Saginaw.

The SHS teams are among those competing in the Knights of Columbus Challenge of Champions Friday and Saturday at Stephenville Soccer Association Columbus. Both the Bees and Jackets are defending champions of their home tournament.
