STEPHENVILLE (January 21, 2017) — Bailey Wipff came out on fire from the start to be sure Tarleton State would not have any kind of let down performance Saturday afternoon, and her TexAnn teammates followed the example in a 67-40 rout of UT-Permian Basin in Lone Star Conference play at Wisdom Gym.
The victory keeps the TexAnns in a tie for third in the LSC. They visit Cameron and Midwestern State next Thursday and Saturday.
Wipff hit a 3-pointer in the opening minute and was 3-4 from the arc by halftime when she had 13 of her game-high 17 points. Ikpeaku Iwobi was a rebound short of a double-double with 14 points and nine boards, and Shelby Mankins came off the bench to score 10 including 5-5 from the foul stripe.
Mackenzie Hailey played just 22 minutes with the game well in hand, deserved rest for star sophomore after four straight double-doubles. The reduced minutes ended that streak as she finished with eight points and five boards.
Tarleton was ahead 16-8 after a quarter and 30-19 by halftime. The TexAnns blew it open in the third quarter, which has been the quarter of success for them of late. They outscored UTPB 26-7 in the third on Saturday, opening up a 56-26 lead entering the fourth. On Thursday, they outscored West Texas A&M by nine in the third, grabbing an eight point lead en rout to a bigger win.
UTPB committed 25 turnovers and Tarleton turned them into 4 points, outscoring the Falcons by 29 off takeaways.
The Falcons were led by Sierra LaGrande with 11 points. They shot just 28 percent from the field including only 20 percent from 3.
