STEPHENVILLE (January 23, 2017) — For the first time in a quarter-century, Hico ISD is welcoming outside applicants for the open role of head football coach and athletic director.

And it turns out a lot of outsiders are trying to find their way in.

Superintendent Jon Hartgraves said as of Monday afternoon his office had received 141 completed applications. The application process is paperless and entirely online and he said he could see that other applications were in progress.

“We have 141 right now but there are others that look like they are in the pipeline,” said Hartgraves. “It’s the first time in 25 years that we haven’t filled this position by promoting from within, and I’m very pleased to see that so many people are interested. I’m pleased, but I’m not surprised by it because we have been successful and we have great facilities.”

Hartgraves says he has personally read all 141 applications, and while some interviews are already being scheduled, he will continue accepting applications until the end of the month.

“If there are more we like, we can add them to the list for interviews,” he said. “Ideally, we’d like to have someone in place around  spring break, but that also depends on them getting out of their current contract.”

Keith Wood resigned in December following nine years as athletic director and head football coach and 21 total years at HISD. He led the Tiger football team to three district championships over the last five years and on state semifinal and quarterfinal playoff runs in 2013 and 2014.
