GLEN ROSE (January 24, 2017) — Hailey Martin put Stephenville in control with 11 points in the second quarter and the No. 10 Honeybees (21-6, 7-1) kept Glen Rose (21-8, 5-4) at arm’s length the rest of the way in a 48-36 win at Tiger Arena that leaves them alone in the driver’s seat for the second playoff position in 8-4A.

The Bees are now also the only challenger left for district leader Godley after Martin finished with 17 points and Stephenville completed a sweep of the third-place Lady Tigers.

The junior guard made three free throws and a 3-pointer before a little floater gave her eight points in the first three minutes of the second quarter, capping a 13-2 run that put the Bees on top 15-11 early in the second.

It was a comeback run by the Bees after Glen Rose used three early free throws and a 3-pointer to lead 9-2. The Bees closed the gap to 11-9 by the end of the first and Martin dominated the second. She hit two free throws to make it 19-13 and a 3 to stretch it to 22-14.

Blair Landes took her turn at launching and making a 3-pointer for a 25-14 advantage, and after Glen Rose scored Jayci Morton was fouled shooting a 3 and hit all the free throw shots for a 28-16 Bees advantage. Morton went on to score two more from the line and the Bees were ahead 30-21 at intermission.

The second half was not nearly as eventful as the 21-point second quarter by Stephenville. The lead swelled to 37-25 on a 3 by freshman guard Madison Carter with 3 minutes left in the third, and Glen Rose pulled within single digits just once the rest of the way.

That margin was short lived with Martin burying a 3 to make it 40-28 and another, her fourth, for a 45-30 lead with just more than four minutes remaining.

Glen Rose cut it to 11 only to see Landes hit another 3, this one ending all doubt with a 48-34 score and under two minutes left.

Landes and Morton scored nine each for Stephenville, Payton Wall added six, Madison Carter five and Jordan Carter two. The Bees host Venus at 6:15 p.m. Friday in Gandy Gym.
