LAWTON, OKLA. (January 26, 2017) — Saying Cameron got hot from the arc in the second half Thursday evening would be an understatement.
A big understatement.
The Lady Aggies were 9-11 from outside the after intermission, and the hot shooting carried them to a 81-72 win over Tarleton in a Lone Star Conference battle at Aggie Gym.
Tarleton was outscored 33-18 from the arc, and 31 combined points by post players Mackenzie Hailey (19) and Ikpeaku Iwobi (12) weren’t enough to overcome it.
Leading the Lady Aggies was Jamie Bonnarens 18 points, Savanna James with 16 and Natalie Halbleib with 13. Bonnarens (2-2) and Halbleib (4-5) combined to knock down six of seven 3-pointers while James battled underneath against the TexAnns’ talented post players. Brittany Hill was also in double figures with 11 for Cameron. She hit three second-half treys before going 3-4 on late free to make it 81-72 with 20 seconds remaining.
It was 65-63 following a runner by Bailey Wipff, who poured in 17 for Tarleton. But Cameron scored 11 of the next 12 to lead by double-digits, and Tarleton could get no closer than 78-72 before the clock and late foul shots by Hill iced it for the Lady Aggies, who ended a two-game skid against Tarleton and have won seven of the last nine in the series they now lead 16-15.
Tarleton, which fell out of a tie for third with the loss, visits Midwestern State at 2 p.m. Saturday in Wichita Falls.
The TexAnns led 32-28 at intermission after nine points from Hailey and eight from Iwobi in the first half. Cameron was just 2-7 from 3 before getting hot after the break.
Tarleton led 17-8 after an 8-0 run consisting of a layup and 3 by Baylee Peck and an ‘and-1’ by Iwobi, and it was 21-12 after one. Cameron outscored the TexAnns 16-11 in the second.
Cameron hosts Texas A&M-Commerce at 2 p.m. Saturday.
