STEPHENVILLE (January 27, 2017) — Cole Pettit scored a career-high 15 points and Stephenville in a 48-36 win over Venus Friday at Gandy Gym.
Pettit was 4-5 from the floor, knocked down both his 3-point tries and went 5-7 from the foul stripe, where the Yellow Jackets outscored the Bulldogs 20-9.
Stephenville improved to 5-3 in 8-4A, giving the Jackets an opportunity to finish in the top three in 8-4A. They face a tough test Tuesday at district co-leader Midlothian Heritage, which lost Friday, 67-66 to Life Waxahachie. Those teams are tied for first in 8-4A, and Stephenville is half a game ahead of Alvarado for third. Four teams advance to the playoffs at the end of the regular season.
Mason Holstein scored 11 and Coby Vandenberg 10 for the Jackets, who relied on defense early for a 14-3 lead after a quarter. It was 28-13 by halftime before Venus offered more resistance in the third and fourth.
The Jackets shot 40 percent from the floor but were just 55 percent, 20-36, from the foul stripe. But getting to the line 36 times proved to make a big difference, as Venus was just 9-20 (45 percent) from the stripe. The Bulldogs shot only 22 percent against the Jacket defnse, going 12-53 from the field. Stephenville out-rebounded Venus, 31-23.
Pettit also dealt three assists and collected four boards to complete his well-rounded performance. Blake Aragon score five, Easton Jones four and Merit Holstein three.
