STEPHENVILLE (February 24, 2017) — A couple double-digit strikeout and shutout pitching performances highlighted opening day of the 2017 regular season for the Stephenville High School baseball team.

The second season under head coach Justin Swenson began in grand fashion with Caleb Gibbons striking out 11 in 5.2 innings of a 9-0 shutout over Mineral Wells, then Easton Jones fanned 10 batters in a 13-0 rout of Burkburnett, both in Mineral Wells.

The Jackets head to Decatur Friday for 3 and 5:30 p.m. games against Fort Worth North Side then Decatur, which eliminated Stephenville in a tightly contested best-of-three Region I-4A area-round playoff series last year.

Matt Perez was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run for the Jackets against Mineral Wells, who committed 10 errors to allow nine Stephenville runs on just seven hits.

Five errors were an even bigger problem for Burkburnett in allowing 13 Yellow Jacket runs on just four hits. K. Averhoff was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI, while Cody Storrs was 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI and three runs scored.
