STEPHENVILLE (March 7, 2017) – Stephenville Fire Chief Jimmy Chew showed his true colors Tuesday night.

Chew was presented an official proclamation related to his being named fire chief of the year by the Texas Fire Chiefs Association late last year and received a standing ovation from the Stephenville City Council and a full audience of onlookers.

As the applause began to die down, Chew spoke like a true leader, deflecting the attention away from himself and toward raging wildfires. He asked the community to keep North Texas firefighters, including three from Stephenville, and everyone affected by wildfire in the Texas Panhandle in their thoughts.

The wildfire had reportedly burned hundreds of thousands of acres and claimed four lives as of Tuesday.

Chew then spoke to his personal passion for protecting those he serves.

“I love Stephenville, I love serving Stephenville, and I love the fire service more than anything in the world,” Chew said.

Presenting the proclamation, Mayor Kenny Weldon heralded Chew as a man dedicated to the service and protection of the lives, families and property across the community.

Weldon said Chew has served the citizens of Stephenville for more than 46 years, beginning his career with the Stephenville Fire Department in 1970. He was named assistant fire chief in 1988 and advanced to fire chief in 2005.

“Jimmy Chew has also dedicated his time and attention to advancing the capabilities and tools necessary to carry out the critical mission firefighters face each day,” Weldon read from the proclamation. “The Stephenville City Council hereby congratulates Jimmy Chew upon being named the Texas Fire Chief of the Year. We honor his faithful and loyal devotion to the Stephenville Fire Department and all those it serves, and we thank him for the measure of devotion he pays to his fellow firefighters and his fellow man.”
