ERATH COUNTY (March 10, 2017) – An Erath County man was shot this morning and the suspect is still on the run.

According to Erath County Chief Investigator Heath Crossland, a 36-year-old man was shot in the neck near the intersection of County Road 539 and FM 2481 in Erath County this morning. Crossland said the victim was seated in the driver’s seat with the window down when he was shot. It is unclear at this time if he was having a conversation with the suspect or just seated in the vehicle.

After being shot, the victim drove to a house on 539 where a female at the residence loaded him into another vehicle and started towards Stephenville to the hospital. Sheriff’s deputies intercepted the vehicle at FM 2481 and US 67. The victim was first taken to TexasHealth Harris Methodist Hospital in Stephenville and then airlifted to a Waco hospital. Crossland said his condition is not known as of 10:40 a.m.

Crossland did say investigators have the vehicle the victim was shot in and there are no other signs of any other bullet holes to the vehicle. Therefore, he said, investigators believe the shot to the victim’s neck is the only shot fired in the incident. He also said the vehicle was not moving when the victim was shot.

The female is currently working with investigators with the sheriff’s office to help identify a suspect in the shooting. However, Crossland said details on the suspect are “sparse at best at this time.”
