STEPHENVILLE (March 20, 2017) — Stephenville (16-3, 4-0) has won three straight overall and four straight against 8-4A district softball opponents by a 63-1 runs margin.
On Monday, the Texas Girls Coaches Association took notice, bumping the Honeybees up to No. 10 in its Class 4A poll. The Bees are the only 8-4A team ranked in the poll and No. 17 Brownwood is the only other Region I-4A team in the poll, which goes through top 20 and ties.
Stephenville has a road test at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Alvarado (12-7, 3-0), which with a win over Godley under its belt is expected to be the Honeybees’ toughest competitor in 8-4A. Alvarado has won five straight, including the key 3-2 victory over Godley.
Stephenville and Alvarado met in the area round of the playoffs last season, with the Bees sweeping their way to their first-ever regional quarterfinal appearance.
The Bees rose as high as No. 6 in the poll last year before being eliminated in the regional quarterfinals by Kennedale. Brownwood won the Region I-4A title last season.
Julia Flores (14-3) has a 2.28 ERA through 79.2 innings in the circle, striking out 123 and allowing less than one hit plus walk per inning and less than one earned run every three innings. The junior is also second on the team with a .543 batting average. She has 25 hits, five home runs and 31 RBI.
Senior third baseman Nadine Arredondo ha seven home runs – breaking her own school record of six – and 33 RBI while hitting .587. Morgan DiCiccio hits .438 and has scored a team-leading 28 runs, Bianka Combs hits .429, Jessica Ebeling .425 and Madison Gilder .400 with 26 runs scored.
Stephenville hits a whopping .422 as a team and has already belted 21 RBI. The Bees are averaging 10 runs per game.
