(April 5, 2017) — Stephenville picked up a much needed 8-4A district baseball win Tuesday evening, when Caleb Gibbons struck out 12 without allowing an unearned run in a 7-2 victory at Glen Rose.

The Yellow Jackets (14-5-2, 3-3) evened the district record after taking the lead for good with two runs in the top of the fourth and breaking it open with four more in the top of sixth.

Gibbons kept battling to full counts – eight of them among the first 18 batters faced – and kept finding ways to fire strike three. His season-high strikeout count and only two hits allowed in 5.2 innings were enough to keep the Tigers from building much of an advantage until the Yellow Jacket bats could get going.

Kade Averhoff walked with the bases loaded to even the score at 1-1 in the top of the fourth before Seth Heupel drove a two-out RBI double to the fence to make it 2-1. It would have been 3-1 after Heupel’s big hit, but the Jackets got into a rundown between third and home.

Averhoff didn’t need a walk in the top of the sixth, instead unloading a 2-run single before scoring himself on a 2-run double to the fence by Luke Bullard. That stretched the advantage to 6-1 and the Jackets made it 7-1 in the top of the seventh.

Glen Rose did earn a run in the seventh, but it wasn’t enough. The Tigers’ other run was of the unearned variety back in the bottom of the first.

Averhoff had a hit and 3 RBI, Heupel finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored, and Derek Gifford, Cody Storrs, Trevor Easter, Bullard and Gibbons had the rest of the eight total hits by the Jackets.

Caleb Smith went the final 1.1 innings on the mound for Stephenville, allowing a run on a hit and striking out one.

The Jackets host Venus Friday. First pitch at James T. Young Baseball Field is 7:30 p.m.
