Tartleon scores season-high 16 runs to complete sweep of UTPB

STEPHENVILLE (April 15, 2017) – Tarleton scored a season high 16 runs on 18 hits en route to a 16-1 win and complete the four-game sweep against UT Permian Basin on Saturday at the Cecil Ballow Baseball Complex.

The Texans (23-17, 6-9) scored early and often against the Falcons. The Texans scored at least one run in all six innings, and scored three or more runs in four innings.

Francisco Rodriguez opened the home half of the first with a leadoff triple to center and would score on Austin Call‘s single to right.  Dylan Lemons and Blake Adamsfollowed with singles, that scored Call and later Lemons on a UTPB passed ball.

Leading 3-0, Call got his second at-bat in as many innings and crushed a three-run home run to left center that made it 6-0 Tarleton. Call went 2-for-3 with two runs and four RBI in the game. Back-to-back doubles by Lemons and Adams scored another run that completed a four-run second inning. Lemons had another multi-hit performance, going 2-for-4 with three runs.
Jose Reyes had an RBI double in the third and Rodriguez singled to score Reyes for a 9-1 lead. It was the second straight game that Reyes went 3-for-3 at the plate, as the second baseman added a run and an RBI.

It was 10-1 in the fourth when Jake Hasbrouck led off with a double and would score on Luis Rivas‘ RBI double to right center. Rivas went 2-for-4 with a run and RBI. Rodriguez added his second RBI of the day on a single up the middle to bring home Rivas and make it 12-1 through four. Rodriguez went 3-for-4 with four runs scored and two RBI.

Adams had his second double of the game in the fifth that set up runners at second and third for Trevor Inman, who doubled down the right field line to score two runs. Adams also had a three-hit performance, going 3-for-4 with an RBI.

Tarleton had nine extra base hits in the game, including seven doubles. Nine Texans had hits in the game as well.

The Texan offense was on fire throughout, but the pitching staff was just as efficient. Nathan Jackson started on the mound, throwing 3.2 innings of two-hit ball with six strikeouts and only one run allowed.

Matt Herrick (3-1) got the win in relief by throwing 2.1 perfect innings and struck out five of the eight batters he faced. Will Blanchard came on in the seventh and set down the side in order to end the game. The Texan pitching staff retired 12 straight UTPB hitters to close it out.

For the series, Tarleton outscored UTPB 46-16 in the four games.

The Texans will travel to Canyon to take on West Texas A&M in a four-game series beginning Friday, April 21. It will be a 1-2-1 series format.
